Meryem Bayram

Meryem Bayram (Antwerp, 1981) is a multidisciplinary artist and scenographer whose work reveals the hidden relationships between objects, spaces and people. Her works consist of installations, performances, and scenographies which are derived from utilitarian objects and landscapes that echo memories of the artist. She extracts and dissects objects from their functional use, generates new affinities, potential stories, genealogies. Through her practice in visual arts, she activates objects and invites artists, developing performative installations and stage performances.

Having received her Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, the artist continued her studies in Scenography at POPOK (Posthogeschool voor Podiumkunsten) in Antwerp, Belgium.

Between 2006-2018, Bayram was a member of the theatre collective OnderHetvel. Since 2006, she has contributed to the artistic development of Platform 0090, a sustainable international platform serving as a workshop and hub for research, creation, residency, production and presentation of trans-disciplinary art. The platform is one of the initiators of The Image Generator, the transdisciplinary festival that explores the intersections of visual art and live experience including performance, sound and movement, through interactive installations, interventions, sonic landscapes. Bayram undertook the curatorship of several editions of the festival.

Her previous scenography commissions Nachtelijke Symposium and Once Upon a Time (Ev’vel Zaman İçinde) were both shown at Istanbul Theatre Festival (2016). Selected presentations of her installations include Paper at Credobonum Gallery in Sofia, Bulgaria (2024) and Skylights - Windows at Krupa Gallery in Wrocław, Poland (2023). Commissioned in 2021 as part of Periphery, a project commissioned by Kunsthal Extra City, her installation is on display until the end of 2025 in Antwerp. Her artist book titled ROUND a BOUT ROUNDABOUT (2020) is part of BAS Artist Book Collection, based in Istanbul.

Meryem Bayram lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.
