What happens when the boundary between humans and nature becomes blurred? In Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer's science fiction thriller, a biologist becomes infected in the mysterious nature reserve known as “Area X”. What follows is a terrifying metamorphosis, a fusion between humans and something unknown. Even outside of fiction, such strange transformations appear to be closer than we think. At the bottom of the deep sea, under the ice of Antarctica or in boiling hot sulphur springs, organisms survive by entering into surprising collaborations. But perhaps the strangest form of symbiosis lies within ourselves.
